IFS & EMDR Therapy in Toowong & Brisbane
An integrative approach for anxiety, trauma, and emotional healing.
At Lumaura Psychology, registered psychologist Mike Spiller integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS) and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) to support trauma recovery and emotional wellbeing.
IFS helps people understand the different “parts” of their inner world—such as protective patterns, emotional reactions, or critical thoughts—while EMDR supports the brain’s natural capacity to process and resolve distressing memories.
When used together, these therapies can help reduce anxiety, ease trauma-related distress, and create space for healthier emotional responses and self-understanding.
Sessions are available in person at our Toowong consulting room or online via Telehealth across Brisbane and Queensland.

Understanding IFS and EMDR Therapy
Internal Family Systems (IFS) and EMDR are two widely recognised approaches used in trauma-informed therapy. Each offers a different way of understanding how difficult experiences shape our thoughts, emotions, and reactions.
IFS therapy helps people explore the different “parts” of themselves that hold feelings, beliefs, or protective roles. Many of these parts developed to help us cope with stress, adversity, or past experiences. By approaching these parts with curiosity and compassion, people can begin to understand the patterns that influence how they feel and respond to life.
EMDR therapy focuses on helping the brain process memories that may still feel emotionally charged. Through guided eye movements or gentle left-right brain stimulation, EMDR supports the brain’s natural ability to integrate these experiences so they become less distressing over time.
Together, these approaches can create a thoughtful balance between understanding internal patterns and helping the brain process unresolved experiences.

How IFS & EMDR Work Together
IFS and EMDR can work together in a complementary way by supporting different stages of the healing process.
IFS therapy often helps people first develop awareness of their internal system. This includes recognising protective parts, understanding their roles, and building a sense of curiosity and compassion toward the experiences these parts carry. This process can help create greater emotional safety and stability before deeper trauma processing begins.
EMDR may then be used to help the brain process specific memories or experiences that continue to hold emotional intensity. Through guided eye movements or gentle left-right brain stimulation, EMDR supports the brain’s natural capacity to integrate these memories so they become less overwhelming.
In practice, therapy may move flexibly between these approaches. IFS can help identify the parts of the system that need support, while EMDR can assist in processing the memories those parts are protecting.
Together, these approaches support both self-understanding and the resolution of difficult experiences, allowing people to move forward with greater clarity and emotional balance.
