Fees & Rebates

Getting Started with Psychology Services

To access psychological services with a Medicare rebate, you’ll need a referral from your GP or Psychiatrist. Most people begin by speaking with their GP, who can prepare a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) if you’re eligible. This plan allows you to claim a Medicare rebate for a set number of sessions each calendar year.

Session length: Appointments are generally 50 minutes.

Fees: Sessions are privately billed, and payment is required at the time of your consultation. If you have a valid MHCP, you can claim the Medicare rebate after your session.

This process means you’ll receive professional support, with Medicare helping to reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)

Through the Australian Government’s Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates on your psychology sessions.

  • Rebates: Medicare currently provides a rebate of $98.95 per session for sessions with a registered general psychologist.

  • Number of sessions: Up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year are available under a Mental Health Care Plan (with the possibility of additional sessions in certain circumstances).

Referral required: To claim, you’ll need a referral and Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician. Please ensure a copy of this referral is provided to us before your first rebate claim.

How to Get a Mental Health Care Plan

  1. Book an appointment with your GP
Make a longer consultation (usually 20–40 minutes) so you have time to discuss your mental health.

  2. Talk about what’s going on
Your GP will ask about your current concerns and history to understand how best to support you.

  3. Receive your Mental Health Care Plan
If appropriate, your GP (or psychiatrist/paediatrician) will prepare a Mental Health Care Plan and referral.

  4. Send us your referral
Please email us a copy or bring it with you so we can apply your Medicare rebate to your sessions.

  5. Book your sessions
Once we have your referral, you’ll be able to claim your rebates directly through Medicare after each eligible session.

Private Health Insurance

We are registered with most major private health insurers. If you wish to claim a rebate, we’ll provide you with a receipt that you can submit directly to your health fund. Please note that the amount you can claim will depend on your insurer and the level of cover you hold. We recommend checking with your health fund before your appointment to confirm your rebate eligibility.

WorkCover & Victims Assist

Lumaura Psychology is a registered provider with both WorkCover Queensland and Victims Assist Queensland.

If you are seeking support through WorkCover, you will need a referral from your GP or treating specialist, and your claim must be approved by WorkCover before sessions can be covered.

If you are accessing services through Victims Assist Queensland, you will need to apply for financial assistance and have your counselling sessions approved as part of your grant.

Please note that different fee arrangements apply under these schemes. We are happy to guide you through the process and answer any questions about eligibility, approvals, or payment.

Appointment Cancellations

We understand that life can be unpredictable and plans may need to change. To help us manage appointments fairly, please note the following:

  • 24–48 hours’ notice – 50% of the full session fee will be charged.
