EMDR Therapy in Toowong & Brisbane

Evidence-based therapy for trauma and distressing memories.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured and evidence-based therapy that helps people process distressing memories and recover from the ongoing impact of trauma. At Lumaura Psychology in Toowong, registered psychologist Mike Spiller provides EMDR therapy for individuals across Brisbane who are experiencing anxiety, trauma, or emotional responses connected to difficult past experiences.

When overwhelming events occur, the brain may not fully process what happened. These experiences can remain stored in ways that continue to influence thoughts, emotions, and reactions long after the event has passed. EMDR therapy helps the brain reprocess these memories so they become less distressing and easier to integrate into your life story.

Appointments are available in person at our Toowong psychology practice or via Telehealth for clients across Brisbane and Queensland.

How We Support EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy is commonly used to help people process difficult experiences that continue to affect emotional wellbeing. It may help with:

  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Distressing or intrusive memories

  • Childhood trauma or complex trauma

  • Anxiety, panic, or heightened stress responses

  • Grief and unresolved loss

  • Negative self-beliefs or low self-worth

  • Emotional reactions that feel overwhelming

Trauma can develop not only from major events but also from repeated or ongoing experiences. Over time these experiences can influence how people interpret situations, respond emotionally, and view themselves.

What is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people process traumatic or distressing memories. It is widely used to treat trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and other difficulties linked to past experiences.

In EMDR therapy, the therapist guides the client to briefly focus on aspects of a memory while engaging in guided eye movements or other forms of alternating sensory stimulation. This process helps the brain reprocess the experience so that it becomes less emotionally intense and easier to integrate.

One of the unique aspects of EMDR therapy is that it does not require people to talk through traumatic events in detail. Instead, the focus is on helping the brain process the memory in a way that supports healing and emotional recovery.
